Milton Margai School for the Blind
On my Ghana Airways flight to Freetown I met a remarkable
woman, Barbara Davidson-Johnson, who works at the School for the Blind
in Freetown. She invited me to visit, and these are some of the photos.
Headmaster Sam F.B. Campbell, Barbara Davidson-Johnson,
and Deputy Headmaster Albert Sandy.
Located on Wilkinson Road the school is basic but well
maintained. The building dates from 1962.

A classroom and the dorms. Most of the 70 or so
students live at the school, but at least a dozen have moved on to university.
Three former students have earned Ph.D.s

Most of the equipment comes from overseas, and the school
makes good use of donations.

While I was there they assembled the students and sang
a number of songs. The headmaster writes much of the music himself.
Nevertheless, the most stirring for me was Sierra Leone's beautiful national
anthem . . . Its amazing that a school like this manages to function
despite the problems the nation faces.
